Stems werd in 2011 in het Verenigd Koninkrijk gevormd door oprichter en componist John Dorr, met het idee om klassieke compositie en instrumenten te mengen met rock. De muziek wordt vaak omschreven als ‘Cinematic’ en wordt soms Post- rock of Neoklassiek genoemd. Sinds 2013 hebben ze verschillende keren door Europa getoerd en een volgende ontwikkeld op basis van hun reputatie voor intense en mooie concerten, vaak met lokale strijkers om het geluid uit te breiden. Uitvoeren van shows met Michael Rother (Neu!), Russische cirkels, getijden uit de nevel, pelikaan, mijn baby, mooie eieren. De band heeft opdrachten gekregen van het British Film Institute om nieuwe live soundtracks te creëren voor de stomme films van Georges Méliés. Die is uitgevoerd in vele Cinema’s en evenementen, zoals een korte tour met de Britse DJ Yoda, inclusief een optreden voor een publiek van 8000 in hun eigen stad, november 2014. Ze hebben ook muziek uitgebracht met Fluttery Records (Istanbul) en Come Play With Me records (Leeds, Verenigd Koninkrijk). Er zijn 4 zelf uitgebrachte CD-albums geweest. De albums zijn vaak voorzien van meerlagige illustraties. In 2018 verhuisde de band naar Neurenberg en voltooide tot nu toe hun meest ambitieuze project – inclusief beelden van NASA en heeft als titel ‘Soundtrack to the stars’ – Een meeslepende ervaring met video’s van ons zonnestelsel en diepe ruimte ingesteld op een genre tartende live soundtrack.

Stems were formed in the UK in 2011 by founder member and composer John Dorr, with the idea of mixing classical composition and instruments with rock. The music is often described as ‘Cinematic’ and sometimes labelled Post- Rock or Neo- Classical.
Since 2013 they have toured Europe several times and developed a following based on their reputation for intense and beautiful concerts, often performing with local string players to expand the sound. Performing shows with Michael Rother (Neu!), Russian Circles, Tides from Nebula, Pelican, My Baby, Lovely Eggs.
The band has received commissions from British Film Institute to create new live soundtracks for the silent films of Georges Méliés. Which has been performed in many Cinema’s and events such as a short tour with British based DJ Yoda, including a performance to an audience of 8000 in their home town, November 2014. They have also released music with Fluttery Records (Istanbul) and Come Play With Me records (Leeds, UK).
There have been 4 self released CD albums, all of which have needed to be re- pressed several times, in 2016 they crowd funded a vinyl, which achieved the funding in 4 days. The albums often features multilayered artwork.
In 2018 the band relocated to Nuremberg and completed their most ambitious project so far – includes visuals from NASA and is entitled ‘Soundtrack to the stars’ –An immersive experience featuring videos of our solar system and deep space set to a genre defying live soundtrack.
